INDIAN FTR 1200 90'S: AN INTERVIEW WITH THE PREPARER.

Manuel Jouan is a 34-year-old preparer from Quimperlé in Brittany, France. IPONE has already worked with him on 3 different projects. We interviewed this bike and mechanics enthusiast in his workshop, his world.

IPONE PROJECTS

What motorcycle projects have you worked on with IPONE ?

The first project was la Samouraï in 2020, a supermoto bike. It was quite a big hit (laughs). Then, last winter, we worked on the Indian FTR 1200 ice version, to ride in Flaine in Haute Savoie. And this winter, this version, which is more urban, with a 90's spirit and colors, to use on roads.

What is the one thing all the bikes you’ve worked on have in common?

Although they are really different in terms of aesthetics and use, I think the one thing they all have in common is the visual appeal they can have. Especially when you see 2 versions of the Indian that are very colorful. For the Samurai, it was more about the visual impact of the use that was important.

THE WORKSHOP: ALWAYS ON THE MOVE

How do you work in your workshop?

I tend to work the old-fashioned way. I don't use computers to design the parts or to visualize the bikes before I make them. I prefer to work on gut feeling with old-fashioned techniques. I like shaping parts or making them with tools that may look modern but are not.

Why do your customers come to you ?

I think it's because I can adapt to different motorcycle styles. I am not limited to one brand, not limited to one model. I'm not limited to one era. I can switch between each project and give an identity to each bike that is strong enough to stand out or to be remembered. They make an impression.

THE INDIAN FTR 1200 90'S

What were the main modifications on this version of the Indian FTR 1200?

On this version of the Indian, the main focus was on the paint, the blue checkerboard and the pink wheels to have something really impactful. For the bodywork, some parts had to be remanufactured. I also modified the exhaust and changed the tires for a road tire setup, even if they have an off-road look because of the studs. The cockpit was also redesigned with more traditional handlebars. And finally, the rear lights were added to make it possible to ride on the road.

Does this bike speak to you?

Yes of course! It has a BMX, 90's feel to it, stuff I personally like too, so yeah, it speaks to me. I wouldn't have necessarily picked these colors but I think it's good because it's visually very impressive, it makes a difference and that's cool!

Thanks Manuel and see you soon for a future project!
